Guest Speakers:

Mr Vijay Valla: DTI Youth Directorate

Vijay Valla, the youth development director of the department of trade and industry, has 20 years experience in the education, training and youth development sector, with an emphasis on youth entrepreneurship. In this field, he has designed an enterprise creation programme for young graduates, reviewed policy for the support of youth entrepreneurship, and assessed numerous youth enterprise and employment programmes for, among others, the International Labour Organisation and the United Nations.

Mr Loyiso Mdebuka: Young Entrepreneur

Loyiso Mdebuka is the founder of two companies: iKapa Live (an online platform dedicated to being the story teller of Cape Town township communities) and DJ Loyd Productions (a multimedia company centred around the management of his main brand, himself). Kapa Live launched in April 2011, and its success was a big surprise to the founders, Loyiso and his partner, with their brand name trending on Trendsmap SA within 12 minutes of the website going live.
Since then, the company has grown exponentially; expanding into other avenues of business. This, Loyiso asserts, can only be attributed to two factors: firstly, the opportunities inherent in the idea; and secondly, the general lack of research that has been put into understanding the digital market, resulting in the need for the company to seek other sources of revenue.

Tshepo Phakathi: CEO of Phakathi Holdings

Tshepo describes himself as a “quintessential workaholic obsessed with solving the problem of unemployment”.  He is the group CEO of Phakathi Holdings, a company with eight subsidiaries and more than 2 000 employees. Phakathi grew up in Soweto, and had started his first business, a tiny recycling operation, at age six. At 16 he started  studying banking at what is now the University of Johannesburg and later completed his BCom in economics through Unisa. While studying, he founded Phakathi Capital Empowerment, a corporate finance advisory company. In 2006 he formed a new parent company, Phakathi Holdings, as an incubator for various smaller businesses. Tshepo recently set up Kaello, a business mentorship hub offering advice and mentorship to young aspirant entrepreneurs.
