We all understand the importance of setting a good example. Children and teens imitate what we do, not what we say. It is the same concept that goes hand in hand with actively mentoring South Africa’s youth. Below, we highlight the reasons why mentorship is such a vital aspect of nurturing great young minds, and how more inspirational adults can get involved in this regard.
Why mentorship is key
In a world full of distractions and other pitfalls that threaten to shake a teen’s resolve to reach their full potential, mentors can help to keep them on track. Often, when a young individual with dreams and talent is guided towards success by someone who has ‘been there and done that’, the chances of them attaining that success are greatly increased.
Research has shown that young members of society with mentors have higher rates of completing matric. They are also less likely to drop out of school. Mentors can teach teens how to find their inner confidence, work on their self-esteem and create short- and long-term goals. A good mentor will teach an entrepreneur to put in the work when it comes to making things happen for themselves.
Ultimately, a mentor plays a significant role in inspiring the youth, as well as in closing the social and economic opportunity gap that has become so evident within our country.
