The stats have spoken. Gone are the days of Facebook and Twitter name dropping and getting by with minimum efforts. Welcome to 2018. The status quo has changed. It cannot and will not be business as usual. You’d better get yourself updated so that you are not left behind.

  1. Twitter fan? See this
There’s no other way to say this, but Twitter seems… Stuck. In 2017, it did not see a significant growth and now has less followers than LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. So if all you’re hanging on to is the chirping birds’ perhaps you need to rethink this platform.
  2. Live streaming is so hot right now
Big and small brands are climbing onto the live streaming band wagon. You can expect to catch more cool events, concerts and launches via live streaming in 2018. So yes, that means you better upgrade/double check your connection so that you can have uninterrupted live streaming.
  3. Location is expected to be hotter (and not) at the same time
Okay, so you somehow got tickets and made it to that ultimate concert of the year. Step one: Take a selfie. Step 2: Plug in location before [modestly] waiting for comments on your newsfeed. Be wised up though. While we can expect fancier ways to share your location; sharing your isolated personal jogging route or notifying peeps that you are away on a holiday and no one is home is potentially not so hot if it leads to crime.
  4. Chatbots are rising
You could be chatting to a computer, without even knowing it. A chatbot is a computer program which conducts a conversation via auditory or textual methods. This is often done in a way to convince you that they are indeed talking to a computer.
  5. Much more voice assist
Forget GPS and think social media taking voice notes and calls being taken to a whole new level. Think customer care redefined. You’d better stick around to see this for yourself this 2018.
  6. Deeper interaction
Make no mistake, brands value your interaction with you on social media. It can be instant and quick as opposed to waiting for you to hopefully click the link they sent to you via SMS. By the way, it is alleged that in 2018, Facebook may be launching some virtual reality connection zone which is currently termed Facebook Spaces.
  7. Expect augmented reality
Apple announced the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X contain a new chip that allows the phones to provide users with extraordinary augmented reality experiences. This can take camera filters and gaming to new levels. Think Snapchat or Instagram images of yourself with celebs, all done with AR filters…

Whatever your main motivation for using social media, you can rest assured that it’s happening this 2018. Social media is about to get so much more personal but with better codes of conduct to protect the user. Expect to be blown away with ideas that can change the world and the way we know and experience social media.
