You will have a number of difficult choices to make in your matric year, and in order to make them, you will need to have a pretty decent idea of what you would like to do with your life in the future. So, what are your options when it comes to life after school? We highlight some of the possible routes below.
Study at a tertiary institution
You may opt to postpone your entrepreneurial dreams while you further your education, as many matriculants do. You may choose to do this through a university, college or technikon, and you may set your sights on a degree or a diploma. Either way, you’ll be taking a big step towards improving your chances of starting a worthwhile career with lots of opportunity to progress further once you graduate.
Do an internship/apprenticeship
This is a wonderful option for those who are interested in pursuing a career that allows them to work with their hands. An internship or apprenticeship is usually all about hands-on, on-the-job learning and will enable you to acquire a host of new skills by working alongside those with more experience in the industry.
Get a job
Another option is to dive right into the market and find a job. This is a great choice if you are looking to start earning money right from the get-go. Although it is always worthwhile pursuing your entrepreneurial aspirations or any one of the other routes mentioned, working a part time job helps make ends meet.
Take a gap year
Taking a gap year is a good option if you are still unsure about where you want your future to take you. Just be sure to use the gap year wisely. Travel, do research, get a part-time job in an area that you have an interest in, and volunteer at various charities. It’s a great time to think things through, but also the perfect time to give back.
Be the entrepreneur you always dreamed of and start your own business
This is probably the path that takes the most courage to follow, and it’s the path that our Teen Entrepreneurs Society will prepare you for. It is reserved only for the most ambitious and determined; however, if done right, and with the help of a great mentor, it can lead to a wealth of opportunities for growth, both from a financial and a personal perspective.
If you’re looking for inspiration to help you make this all-important decision, be sure to attend the SA Teen Entrepreneur ‘Awaken the Giant in You‘ Grand Finale on October 19th 2019 at the Southern Sun Cape Sun Hotel, Strand Street, Cape Town CBD. Teens pay just R50 entrance!
