Perhaps there is truth in the Indonesian proverb that states that “a firm tree does not fear the storm.” In a hurricane, it helps to be grounded and surrounded by people who will look out for your good, encourage, protect and support you. When the winds of life howl, you’d better have an army of loved ones and mentors around you because it can make all the difference.
Your associates matter
During the national lockdown, there were many voices. It is normal to differ. Yet in times of pressure, when your strength is weak, and you’re at the verge of giving up, those around you can truly make or break you. Your digital world or tangible school friends and entrepreneur’s society peers can cheer you on to think of a way out or help you dig deeper towards a dark hole of doom and gloom.
Friends are imperative to your development
The influence of friends and associates cannot be over-emphasised. If you connect with negative people who have no ambition; the chances are that it will only be a matter of time before you join in. This is not the time to have endless pity parties and gossip; on the contrary. South Africa needs you.
Surround yourself with those who feed your flame and steer you to find solutions, such as for the COVID-19 Global High School Idea Challenge which we have extended until the end of May 2020.
How family fits into your development goals
As you transition towards being a responsible, independent human being; you need to draw strength from your family and all their positive attributes. Remember that families are different. Some families can be made up of parents and siblings, aunts, grandparents, a single parent, foster care, a religious community or even strangers who came together and supported each other through thick and thin.
Surround yourself with people who promote your dreams in entrepreneurship, planning, business ideas and personal development. Find those who will cover your vulnerabilities and help you to become the best version of self. It is not about competing, but about working together.
If you can identify people who celebrate your joys and cry with you when you are going through uncertain times; hang on to them. Tell them that you love and appreciate them, but don’t let it stop there. One day, when you find your wings and soar, pay it forward by being that person who feeds and protects the light in others.
