At the moment, humans are using (and depleting) the earth’s resources without giving anything back. It’s for this reason that we are experiencing dramatic consequences, such as climate change, and why it has become so crucial for everyone – individuals and businesses alike – to prioritise sustainability and to make long-term changes. Luckily, there are hopes of building a circular economy through the efforts of young and innovative zero waste entrepreneurs. Here’s what you need to know.
What is a circular economy?
A circular economy refers to an economy that gives back as much as it takes out. It’s the type of economy that strives to provide solutions to various problems, including climate change, pollution, and waste. The three goals of such an economy are to eliminate waste and pollution, to keep existing products and resources in use over and over again, and to regenerate and replenish natural systems to ensure a steady supply of resources well into the future.
What are zero waste entrepreneurs?
Zero waste entrepreneurs are the people who will be responsible for creating and nurturing a circular economy. They are essentially entrepreneurs who are able to provide/create products or services that lead to no waste whatsoever. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t make use of any resources along the way, but rather that they put processes into place to actively deal with any waste that may result, actively turning it into new resources for others to use. For example, if you have a business focused on growing food for your community and there is leftover produce at the end of the week that isn’t suitable for human consumption, you could then make the decision to turn the leftovers into a nutritious fertiliser to fertilise your future crops.
How you can help
Instead of focusing purely on generating profits, turn your attention to reducing waste NOW. Not only will it save/earn you more money in the long run, but it will go a long way towards impressing your customers and growing your reputation, too. You’ll also be helping to undo the bad habits of the past to create a better future for yourself and future generations of young entrepreneurs.
